History of World Peace Pagoda in Pokhara
The World Peace Pagoda, also known as the Shanti Stupa of Pokhara, is one of the more than 80 Peace Pagodas located worldwide. The pagoda was built under the guidance of Nichidatsu Fuji (1885-1985), a Japanese Buddhist monk and the founder of Nipponzan Myohoji. Nichidatsu had a vision to promote global Peace, which he showcased through the construction of Peace Pagodas, especially after witnessing the devastating results of World War II.
In Nepal, the Peace Pagoda was constructed by Buddhist monks affiliated with the Nipponzan Myohoji, with the support of local devotees. Now, the Peace Pagoda stands tall on Anadu Hill at an altitude of 1,100 meters, offering an aerial view of the Pokhara valley and Phewa Lake below. The stupa was completed in 1999 and has since become one of the most prominent landmarks in the Pokhara Valley.
The Shanti Stupa is painted white, symbolizing purity and Peace. Besides, the stupa is adorned with four Buddhist statues, where each represents some of the vital events in the life of Buddha, including:
- Birth of Buddha
- Enlightenment
- First Sermon
- Nirvana/Death
Additionally, the top of the Shanti Stupa features a golden spire, symbolizing enlightenment. The area also features prayer wheels and prayer flags that represent Buddhist practices, symbolizing the spread of Peace, compassion, and blessings to the world. One can often see local devotees circumambulating the stupa, offering prayers, meditating, and creating a spiritual atmosphere.
How does the Pokhara Shanti Stupa Hike Start and End?
The World Peace Pagoda is one of the famous landmarks of Pokhara, Nepal. The exploration typically begins with a visit to the tourist city of Pokhara. Hikers will make their way to the Lakeside area of Pokhara, where they will explore the famous Phewa Lake. There are options for boating in Phewa Lake, offering a relaxing and peaceful experience. The boating experience will also allow you to view the reflection of Annapurna and Machhapuchre on the lake on clear days. Similarly, hikers can pay homage to the Tal Barahi Temple located in the middle of the lake. In the meantime, hikers will cross Phewa Lake to reach the foot of the Shanti Stupa hiking trail. Then, hikers will begin the uphill walk to the Shanti Stupa, which will take approximately one to two hours, depending on their pace. Hikers will make their way through the forested area, passing by some small cafes or hotels along the way, which serve drinks and snacks. Then, with the steep walk, hikers will reach the top of the Shanti Stupa.
Upon reaching the summit of the Shanti Stupa, hikers can enjoy the tranquil environment. It is strongly recommended to maintain Peace in the stupa premises. Now, hikers are welcomed by the white, dome-shaped structure with some parts painted golden, which is the Peace Stupa—the main attraction of the area. The Peace Pagoda is a Buddhist monument situated atop Anadu Hill, which was built by Nipponzan Myohoji monk Morioka Sonin. The pagoda represents Peace and stands tall at an altitude of 1,100 meters. The pagoda itself is 115 feet tall and 344 feet in diameter.
The Shanti Stupa on Anadu Hill adds to the beauty of the Pokhara Valley, where hikers can enjoy an aerial view of the valley below, notably Fewa Lake. It is also known as the one of the best places to visit in Pokhara. Besides, on a clear day, one can easily see the Himalayan range, including Annapurna and Machhapuchre. Hikers can also gain a deeper understanding of the Buddhist religion and culture while surrounded by prayer wheels and prayer flags. It is also an excellent place for meditation, and you can often see locals circumambulating the stupa, praying and seeking blessings.
With the quality time in and around the stupa, begin the return journey. You can hike down a different route, passing through local villages and observing daily life. Then, you can enjoy some local dishes or stop by a nearby location. Once hikers reach the base of the stupa, a vehicle will transport them to the lakeside area or a predetermined spot marking the end of the hike, as arranged by Trekking Planner Nepal. If coming along the same route, hikers will boat back to the lakeside area.
What is the Best Time for the World Peace Pagoda Day Hike?
The Shanti Stupa hike is a day-long activity that is available throughout the year. However, the seasons in Nepal offer a distinct experience at various times of the year. The best times for the Shanti Stupa Day hike are spring and Autumn.
Spring in Nepal lasts from March to May, making it one of the best seasons for hiking in the country. Spring is marked by blooming rhododendrons, which add vibrant colors to the Himalayan landscape. During the spring season, the weather is moderate, which provides comfortable walking conditions. Similarly, the skies are clear, offering unobstructed views of the mountains.
Autumn in Nepal lasts from September to November, making it another ideal time for hiking in the country. Among all the seasons in Nepal, Autumn is the best time for hiking. During the autumn season, the skies are clear and crisp, which offers breathtaking panoramic views of the mountains. Likewise, Autumn starts with the onset of post-monsoon, so the landscape is lush and green. The trail is less muddy and slippery, which makes the hike more comfortable.
Summer in Nepal lasts from June to August, which is marked by scorching sun or heavy rainfall. It is not a favorable time for hiking, as the trails are slippery and the views are obstructed. However, there are fewer people on the trail, making it a quality time to be in Peace, solitude, and close to nature. On the other hand, winter in Nepal lasts from December to February, during which the weather is cold. Hikers should pack an additional layer of clothing to counter the chilly effect.
