Cholatse Peak climbing - 24 Days Itinerary

Day 1

Arrival in Kathmandu 1,350 m and transfer to Hotel.

Max Altitude: 1,350m (4,429ft)

On arrival at Kathmandu international airport via respective airlines, where you will be received by our office staff and guide with warm welcome then transfer to your hotels in the hub of the city.

After checking into your rooms and getting refreshed join the other groups for briefing on Cholatse Peak Climbing with Gokyo Lake to Everest Base Camp Trekking, our guide offers you with useful important information regarding trek and your stay in Nepal with us.

Evening includes welcome dinner in a nice and authentic Nepalese restaurant with Folk Culture program of Nepal while having your dinner.

Day 2

Full day in Kathmandu trek and climb preparation.

Max Altitude: 1,350m (4,429ft)

In Kathmandu preparation for the climb of Cholatse and trekking arranging necessary gear and equipment for the adventure, with rest or join in for short optional tour around Kathmandu at places of great interest.

Day 3

Fly to Lukla 2,830 m & trek to Phakding 2,640 m - 04 hrs.

Max Altitude: 2,830m (9,284ft)

Starting early morning transfer to domestic airport for short and scenic flight to Lukla, taking a smaller aircraft (Twin Otter or Dornier) during 30 minutes on air with amazing panorama of Himalayan series of peaks with Mt. Everest, as the plane lands on its unique uphill runways reaching at Tenzing & Hillary airport in Lukla.

From here a slow start with few hours of walks on downhill past many Sherpa farm villages with well tended crops and vegetable fields and terraces with occasional views of snow capped peaks of Kwangde and Kusum Khanguru, and then reaching our first overnight stop of the trek at Phakding in the comfort of nice and cozy lodge located by the raging Dudh Kosi River.

Day 4

Trek to Namche Bazaar 3,440 m - 06 hrs.

Max Altitude: 3,440m (11,286ft)

Today with long uphill walk to reach at famous Namche Bazaar, starting with gradual walk following Dudh Kosi River upstream crossing few bridges to reach Sagarmatha National Park entrance near Monjo village.

Sagarmatha for Everest in Nepalese while Sherpa calls Chomolungma (of Tibetan origin) in both languages means 'Great Mother', from here a pleasant walk on river bed then climb for few hours into forested trail with views of snow capped peaks, as this scenic walk reaches you at exciting Namche Bazaar.

Day 5

Rest day at Namche Bazaar for acclimatization and local excursion.

Max Altitude: 3,440m (11,286ft)

A rest day at Namche Bazaar for necessary acclimatization, before heading higher area an ideal spot for free day at this height above 3,440 m high.

In Namche spend the day with scenic hike to view points on top Namche facing Mt. Everest-Ama Dablam and other range of peaks, afternoon explore the streets and shops, Namche holds a colorful and busy Saturday Market once a week.

Day 6

Trek to Dole 4,110 m - 06 hrs.

Max Altitude: 4,110m (13,484ft)

From Namche walk leads on gradual scenic path with uphill to reach at Mong Hill with few houses serving as Tea-House and Lodge with fantastic views of peaks, from here downhill to Phortse Tenga near Dudh Kosi within forested area.

With possible lunch stop, afternoon walk leads to a climb into rhododendron, pines, fir forest with grand views of snow-capped peaks.

After few hours climb reaching at Dole at 4,110 m high a moderate size settlement with good lodges to stay.

Day 7

Trek to Machherma 4,470m - 04 hrs.

Max Altitude: 4,470m (14,665ft)

After Dole, walk on high trail for an hour to Lhabarma Kharka at 4,325 m and Luza at 4,390m; then skirting around a ridge with views of Machherma, situated below on a small valley, walk downhill to Machherma for lunch and overnight stop.

Here after lunch rest of the afternoon free for acclimatization and short hike with views of Mt. Cho Oyo 8,210m and other mountains flanking above Ngozumba Glacier.

Day 8

Trek to Gokyo 4,800m -04 hrs.

Max Altitude: 4,800m (15,748ft)

Morning walk leads to Gokyo Lake following a scenic trail to Pangka 4,545m, then climb on rocky path into ablation valley passing first lake and then second lakes, to reach a third lake called Dudh Pokhari or Gokyo Lake.

This beautiful area within Gokyo at 4,790 meters high, after lunch short walk around lake with views of Mt. Cho Oyo world’s 06th highest and Gyachung Kang that reflects on emerald Gokyo Lake.

Day 9

At Gokyo hike to Gokyo-Ri 5,357m and trek to Thagnak 4,750m - 04 hrs.

Max Altitude: 4,750m (15,583ft)

Morning hike to Gokyo-Ri 5,357m, offers panorama of world’s highest peaks from Mt. Cho Oyo, Gyachung Kang, Mt. Everest, Mt. Lhotse with Cholatse, Taweche and to the east rises Mt. Makalu. After a mesmerizing time at Gokyo Ri and then descend to Gokyo for lunch and then short walk to Thagnak beneath Ngozumba Glacier with rest of the afternoon free at leisure to enjoy the surrounding views.

Day 10

Cross Cho-la 5,367m and trek to Dzongla 4,830 m -07 hrs.

Max Altitude: 4,830m (15,846ft)

Starting before dawn with long climb to top of Cho - la pass (actual spelling Tsho -la) over rocky moraine, in snow condition this will be tough to find the right path in snow and ice, walking on rubble of moraine reaching at the top enclosed by Cholatse, Nirekha and Taboche peaks, after a hard climb to the top, descend to a small valley at Dzong-la for overnight halt.

Day 11

Trek to Lobuche 4,930 m - 05 hrs.

Max Altitude: 4,930m (16,174ft)

After a nice and pleasant stop at Dzongla after crossing a high pass over Tsho-La / Cho-la, morning walk leads to short steep climb with excellent views of peaks, and then walking on gradual uphill trail to reach on top Thugla, where massive Khumbu glaciers melt into raging rivers.

After a break a nice walk leads you to Lobuche for overnight stop with sunset views of Nuptse and Lobuche peaks.

Day 12

Trek to Everest Base Camp 5364 m back at Gorakshep 5,180 m - 06 hrs.

Max Altitude: 5,364m (17,598ft)

Today our adventure takes you at Everest Base Camp our main goal and highlight of the trip walking for few hours with short steep climb in between glacier and moraine, then reaching at Gorakshep, beneath lofty peak of Pumori and Kalapathar rocky hill.

Walk continues towards Everest base camp, at base camp enjoy views of massive Khumbu Ice Fall and glaciers, after an exciting time with experience of a lifetime retrace the journey back to Gorakshep for overnight stop.

Day 13

Hike to Kalapathar 5,545 m and walk to Dzongla and at Cholatse Base Camp 4,595 m - 06 hrs.

Max Altitude: 5,545m (18,192ft)

Early morning climb on top Kalapathar at above 5,545 m, highest spot of the trek offers magnificent views of mountains includes Mt. Everest at close distance, after a great time on top descend back to Gorakshep for breakfast and continue walk to Thugla, from here downhill to Lobuche to reach back at Dzongla to set base camp with tents and different unit of kitchen.

Day 14

At Cholatse base camp preparation for the climb.

Max Altitude: 4,595m (15,075ft)

Enjoy rest at Cholatse base camp as well with full preparation for the climb on top Cholatse, this day allows you to scout the best possible route towards the summit and as well to study the nature of the climb for safe and enjoyable climb.

Day 15

Climb and set camp I at above 5,130 m - 04 hrs.

Max Altitude: 5,130m (16,830ft)

Morning after full preparation climb towards ice and glaciers above a small icy pond surrounded by moraine and rocks, as climb progress higher to reach and find possible flat level area to pitch overnight camp for further climb.

Day 16

Climb to set camp II at approx 5,680 m high - 03 hrs.

Max Altitude: 5,680m (18,635ft)

Climb leads straight towards main summit route of Cholatse with some technical know-how and then climb on ice and snow ledge and serac to possible spot to set Camp II just few hours beneath the summit top of Cholatse.

Day 17

Ascent Cholatse peak top 6,335 m descend to base camp-08 hrs.

Max Altitude: 6,335m (20,784ft)

Last day of the climb starting early dawn before sunrise to escape from high strong wind as well with wind-chill factor that adds much cold, as climb heeds higher encountering some technical side to overcome and then step on top of the summit conquering one of most challenging peaks of Nepal Himalaya.

From the top feeling victorious and in high spirit enjoy the beauty of spectacular panorama of amazing landscapes with mountains that lies close includes Mt. Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse and other giant peaks.

Day 18

Contingency day in case of bad unfavorable weather conditions.

Reserved in case of bad unfavorable weather condition as contingency day if all goes well according to our plan and itinerary days enjoy leisure walk back to Lukla with time to marvel the beauty of high Khumbu valley.

Day 19

Return trek to Pangboche 3,900 m via Pheriche -05hrs.

Max Altitude: 3,900m (12,795ft)

Early morning after clearing the base camp free from litters and garbage walk down to Thughla with more downhill walk to reach at Pheriche windy valley and then leads to scenic pleasant walk to Pheriche for possible lunch stop.

Pheriche houses many lodges with a health post and a station of HRA (Himalayan Rescue Association). From here another few hours of good walk reaches you at Pangboche village for overnight halt.

Day 20

Trek to Namche Bazaar - 06 hrs walks.

Max Altitude: 3,440m (11,286ft)

Walk leads on same route from Pangboche to reach at scenic Thyangboche Monastery, allowing you with more time on this beautiful spot to explore its interesting monastery and observe monks and priest on prayer chanting in the harmony of tranquil surrounding of green woodland and mountain views.

From Thyangboche walk downhill with short up to reach at Namche Bazaar with grand views of Everest and Amadablam includes other close peaks then reaching at Namche for overnight stop after a pleasant walk of short ups and downs.

Day 21

Trek to Lukla - 06 hrs.

Max Altitude: 2,830m (9,284ft)

Our last day walk of the great adventure, morning starts with long descend towards Sagarmatha National Park entrance at Monjo village and then crossing a long bridge to reach at Phakding.

From Phakding towards Lukla as walk leads ups and downhill with last climb of an hour to reach at Lukla for last overnight stop in Khumbu and Everest region.

Day 22

Fly to Kathmandu and transfer to hotel.

From Lukla an early morning flight to Kathmandu with panorama of mountains views all the way to Kathmandu, at Kathmandu domestic airport our staff transfers you back into your hotel with free afternoon to relax after a great and wonderful adventure on Cholatse Peak Climb and Trekking.

Day 23

In Kathmandu free day for individual activities.

Today a free day in Kathmandu reserved as extra day in case of flight delay and cancellation in Lukla, due to unfavorable bad weather conditions which can occur sometimes as Himalaya weather can be unpredictable.

If all goes well as per our guideline set itinerary, one can enjoy this day relaxing or with individual extra activities or book for another exciting tour around Kathmandu at places of great interest.

Day 24

Final International departure from Nepal.

Your last day in Nepal, country of Himalayan wonders and as per your international flight time depart for homeward bound or to next respective connecting destinations.

What is the best season or time for Cholaste Expedition?

The Cholatse Peak is located in the Khumbu region, in northeastern Nepal and lies under the Himalayan rain shadow. The weather in this region is mostly influenced by the Indian monsoon system and the westerlies.

  • Autumn Season (September to November): During the autumn season (September to November), the monsoon season has ended, and the skies are clear, making it an ideal time for mountaineering expeditions.  Temperatures are lower than in the spring, making acclimatization to higher altitudes easier. The neighboring mountains provide beautiful vistas, and the route conditions are often dry and steady. This is the peak season for climbing Cholatse Peak, therefore climbers can expect higher competition for permits and hotels. But expedition with Trekking Planner Nepal facilitates with pre booking of hotels as well as permits facilities so you can ensure about the trek.
  • Spring season (March to May): The temperatures are somewhat warmer during the spring season, and the vegetation is in full bloom, making the view more colorful and bright. This season, however, is busier than the autumn season, with more climbers attempting to climb at this time.

  • Summer season (June to August): Because of the monsoon season, climbing is not suggested during the summer months (June to August). The region gets severe rains, landslides, and generally terrible trail conditions.
